Description

2011 Argon 18 E114

The bike of choice for some of the world’s finest triathletes such as Tim O’Donnell, Luke Bell, Ain-Alar Juhanson, Samantha McGlone and Bree Wee, the E-114 needs no introduction.

Known for its stability and comfort, featuring the ONEness concept and AHB 5000 integrated handlebar, the E-114 offers a wide positioning adjustment range for a sound ergonomic union of rider and bike.

Properly positioned on a stable bike, you’ll be more aerodynamic and faster, because in truth, the main source of aerodynamic drag is the rider, much more than any part of the bike.

The E-114 is fully compliant with UCI regulations governing the dimensions and technical characteristics of time-trial bikes, as set out in its technical bulletin published in July 2009.

  • A unique, adapted geometry, with razor-sharp steering and unparalleled stability, even in situations where it is impossible to stay on the tribar extensions with other bikes. Every dimensional aspect has been defined in order to maximize bike control, even at extreme levels of exertion.
  • A longer wheelbase increases stability, but where the extra length is situated is important for balanced performance. 400mm chainstays ensure proper chainline alignment, for faultless, dependable shifting.
Aerodynamics

When Torbjorn Sindballe established a new record for the bike split at Kona, his average speed was just over 40kph. This is a realistic speed for aerodynamic bike testing in a wind tunnel, so our data is based on this speed.

From the fork to the seat stays, every aspect of the E-114 is shaped to favor smooth airflow and reduce drag. At 40 kph, this translates to a 12% drag reduction in a headwind and an average reduction of 18% in crosswinds, compared to the E-80, twice ridden to World Triathlon Championships.

Carbon Fiber

7050 carbon was developed with the design objective of reconciling enough vibration damping capacity for IM-distance comfort (even with wider aero-section tubes) while retaining the kind of rigidity that ensures rock-solid stability and predictable handling as well as a super-stiff lower frame area for complete power transfer.

The E-114 is a model of integrated design

Apart from the fork , headset, brakes and seatpost, the frame comes with:

  • The ONEness structural fairing, in two sizes for reach adjustment (XS/S: 6.5cm and M/L: 9cm).

The AHB 5000 integrated handlebar, an Argon 18 exclusive, which includes the following components:

  • Two sets of carbon tri-bar extensions, straight and S-bend.
  • Carbon brake levers.
  • Carbon arm rests.
  • All necessary bolts and hardware for adjustment and assembly
  • Total weight of the bullhorn/tri bar/armrest combination is only 740g.

Having already received the Institut de Design Montréal’s prize in the hotly contested industrial design category, the E-114 has just been awarded the coveted Eurobike Award in the “Speed Bike” category.

For Gervais Rioux, who developed the E-114, this award “confirms, at the international level, Argon 18’s capacity for innovation…the E-114 is more than just a bike, it reflects our determination in pursuing the company’s international development in the highly competitive market for ultra-high end bikes”.

A fully unified design, the E-114 frameset includes the frame, fork, headset, bullhorn bars and aerobar extensions as well as the brakes and brake levers.
This increase aerodynamic efficiency by 12% against a headwind on axis and by an average of 18% in sidewinds, compared to the E-80, two-time winner of triathlon world championships.
The E-114 fork
While a conventional fork remains essentially an articulated structural component that steers the bike, the E-114 fork also acts as a forward structural fairing, masking the conventional headset completely and smoothing the airflow around this part of the bike.
The new AHB5000 aerobar/bullhorn bar combination is completely integrated with the fork. The entire unit is made of HM carbon (including armrests) in exclusive Argon 18 molds. The ONEness concept offers a handlebar and armrest height adjustment range of 4.5cm, and thanks to well-conceived headtube heights in every size, it becomes as easy to dial in the perfect position for beginners as it is for pros. The 6006 HM includes only the best unidirectional high-modulus fibers and is custom-tailored for the E-114. Main characteristics:
ASP 5000 seatpost
o 78 or 76-degree seat angle.
o Saddle tilt and setback are adjusted separately, facilitating even the most minute position changes.
